Yes you would need to remove the old rivet first.

Once done drill a pilot ( small hole) through the handle at the position you would like the screw .

place the handle onto the wooden handle and make sure it is facing the right direction. insert a screw that is not less than 3/4 of the thickness of your wooden handle, and fully screw into position fixing the D handle to the Wooden handle
