Hi Raymond, start with a small pilot masonry drill if you have one [or 6mm/ 1/4 inch], then use a 12mm for the finished hole. If drilling into medium density cinder type/ lightweight Thermalite aggregate block you might want to use 11mm as the hole enlarges as the material crumbles quite a lot.
