you should still soak the stone, but as you will know water and oil don’t mix. which is why a small amount of oil should be used as a lubricant. it will also aid in the sharpening process. if you do use vegetable oil.( in case of an emergency) please ensure the stone is rinsed afterward and any excess oil removed. as this will clog up the sharpening stone making it less effective.
