How do I replace the eyelets on my tarpaulin?
Richard from Derbyshire
Richard from Derbyshire has posed a question. He wants to renew the tarpaulin, I think it’s ready for camping season or maybe he’s got a trailer, and wanted to know the best type of replacement eyelet to go on his tarpaulin. This is standard grade tarpaulin and you can get very thin ones, you can get quite thick ones. This is a reinforced edge, so it’s quite thick.
How is the quickest way and best way, in my opinion, to put a new eyelet in? These are the new eyelets – they’re two piece with a rubber gasket, so they seal very effectively. They’re plastic, so they’re water proof. They won’t rust or corrode. Literally, it’s as easy as this: take a standard craft knife, make about a 13mm cross in the tarpaulin so you can then put your finger through. You then insert the grommet with the rubber gasket through from the underside so the pieces pop up through here. You then take the top cap, place it over there, just clip it on the top of it. Then using a rubber mallet, two or three taps; job done, in place. Plastic 13mm in here – it’s as easy as that to replace the eyelets around your tarpaulin.
