Garden season is upon us, and one of the questions that I had raised last week is: I’ve just come to use my bow saw, and the blade is rusty and has lost some teeth. I need to replace the blade. How do I do it?

Quite easy. Buy the replacement blade of the correct length for the bow saw you’ve got, which in this case is a 21-inch bow saw. At the end of your bow saw is a nut and bolt, and at the other end of the bow saw is an interesting little two-piece blade holder and a tensioning handle.

What you need to do is, at the end of the blade here, nearest the handle, there’s a little latch which the blade hooks over, and then the other part slides over to hold the blade. At the far end of the bow saw, the blade fits into the slot. With the nut and bolt, attach and tighten up with a Phillips screwdriver.

To tension the blade, there’s no magic about it. You basically clip the hand around, snap it in place, and it has tensioned the blade, ready for use.
